Barger and Wick receive lifetime achievement award; others honored

By SEAN LEWIS
AGC of Washington

The AGC of Washington on Jan. 29 recognized an outstanding group of individuals whose backgrounds and experience vary, but who have demonstrated a common passion for serving their industry and community. These individuals were honored at the association’s annual convention in Bellevue.

Lifetime Achievement

Wick

Barger

Steve Barger

Northwest Cascade

Barger has devoted over a decade to serving the local construction industry and the AGC of Washington, both as president in 2008 and for two terms on the board of trustees. His leadership during his presidency led to the revitalization of AGC’s Future Leadership Forum, which today has grown to over 460 members and is an active and engaged group.

Peter Wick Jr.

Wick served on AGC’s original property committee, which was responsible for procuring the iconic AGC Building on Lake Union. The building opened in 1974 much as a result of his dedication and commitment to the project. He was the president of the Seattle Northwest Chapter of AGC in 1968, and was recognized as AGC’s Contractor of the Year in 1980. Wick retired from the property committee in 2015, marking 50 years of service to the association.

Contractor of the Year

Mayo

Paul Mayo

Flatiron Construction

Mayo was a key contributor to the AGC-led effort to pass a state transportation package during the last legislative session. He spent countless hours working with AGC government affairs staff, meeting with legislators and testifying at hearings in Olympia. He also met with members of Washington’s congressional delegation to advocate for a federal transportation package. Mayo served as co-chairman for WSDOT’s design-build committee, working to improve the process. He has been active in AGC’s Next-Generation Task Force to help connect all generations of members. He currently serves on the AGC board.

Subcontractor of the Year

Williams

Gordon Williams

F.S. & G.S. Services

Williams supports his community and the industry he serves. He has donated the use of his company trucks and workers to deliver food for AGC’s Southern District food drive for the past 10 years. Each Friday before Thanksgiving, his crews pick up fresh food for over 120 families at local grocery stores. Williams has been committed to this project in good economic times as well as in leaner years. He gives back in an unassuming way, but serves as a role model for his employees. Over 2,500 Pierce County families have benefited from Williams’ efforts.

Associate of the Year

Kendall

Bob Kendall

Star Rentals

Over the many years that Star Rentals has been an AGC member, Kendall has provided the means and encouragement for employees to be involved in the association. Kendall supports AGC programs and events, and is the only rental company to provide equipment for the past eight years to support King County Construction Career Day. From golf tournaments to special events, Kendall and his employees are advocates for the AGC.

Distinguished Service (AGC Education Foundation)

Garlock

Paul Garlock

Lydig Construction

Garlock is a certified project superintendent with more than 35 years of experience. He started as an apprentice carpenter and worked his way up to project general superintendent at Lydig Construction. Garlock has taught continuing education courses for the Education Foundation since 1987. He developed, implemented and teaches the Construction Technical Skills series and Time Management for the Construction Professional courses. He sits on AGC of America’s STP Curriculum task force, is on the foundation’s workforce development committee called Tomorrow’s Construction Workforce Today, and has served on the continuing education advisory committee.

2016 Legislator of the Year

King

Senator Curtis King

District 14 Senator Curtis King solves problems and goes the extra mile on behalf of issues important to the construction industry. He led the fight for the $16 billion transportation package, and he made sure that the funding was tied to critical reforms. This package will create construction jobs in both the public and private sectors for years to come, and will help end gridlock on the freeways and in the political arena.

2016 Leader of the PAC

Osborne Construction

This award recognized Osborne Construction as the top contributor to AGC’s Build PAC in 2015, as well as the firm’s leadership and involvement with advancing the construction industry in Washington.

Sean Lewis is the marketing director for AGC of Washington. He has been in the construction industry for more than 20 years.
