STP starts fixing damaged pier

SEATTLE — Seattle Tunnel Partners on Friday started repairing 22 timber piles at Terminal 46 that were damaged last month by a barge used to haul mining muck from the waterfront tunnel dig.

Crews from Global Diving & Salvage are replacing piles on the northern edge of the terminal with temporary steel pipe fender piles. WSDOT says work could take up to 10 days. It couldn't say how much the repairs will cost.

The steel piles will be replaced at a later date with wood fender piles. A schedule for that work has not been set.

On Jan. 14 the state suspended tunneling operations after a sinkhole formed behind the tunneling machine called Bertha and a listing barge spilled muck into Elliott Bay. Crews cut the barge loose and it drifted into the pier, damaging the piles.

STP is analyzing the incidents and new work plans. It can resume tunneling when the state is satisfied with the plans.

STP plans to remove muck by truck if tunneling resumes before Terminal 46 is repaired.
