April 25, 2016
Bellingham Public Schools will start construction in June on a new building at 2015 Franklin St. to house Options High School.
Zervas Architects designed the two-story, 52,000-square-foot building, which is slated to open in August 2017.
The school is an alternative to traditional high school for students in grades 9 to 12. The program is now housed in portables on the project site, and has 110 students.
The district is seeking construction bids by May 12, according to a notice in the April 7 DJC.
The team also includes Curtis Lawyer, owner's representative; Freeland & Associates, civil engineer; Kingworks Consulting Engineers, structural engineer; Sazan, mechanical engineer; K-Engineers, electrical engineer; and JLR Design Group, kitchen consultant.
The new school is designed so that it can eventually accommodate 400 students.
It will have 15 learning studios, a gym and space for the Career & Technical Education program. The commons/cafeteria area will double as a black-box theater.
There will also be space for GRADS, a program for pregnant and parenting teens that will include infant, toddler and prekindergarten rooms. The school will have a roof garden and potentially a greenhouse. A solar array may also be installed.
Students in Options High School will go to Bellingham High School during construction.
