Panels go up at Ikea in Renton

Deacon Corp. has started installing the iconic blue composite panels that will clad the new Ikea store in Renton along Southwest 41st Street, adjacent to the existing Ikea.

When it opens in spring 2017, the 399,000-square-foot store will have two levels, and an updated layout similar to other Ikea stores. It will have space for 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children's play area, and a larger restaurant for serving Swedish specialties.

Dickson Co. last year demolished the parking garage complex where the new store is being built. Dickson will return to demolish the existing store after Deacon finishes the new one. A 1,600-stall parking garage will be built in place of the demolished store.

An Ikea news release said the retailer is looking at potential on-site power generation as part of its goal to have renewable energy at nearly 90 percent of its U.S. locations.

Atlanta-based GreenbergFarrow is the architect, Barghausen Consulting Engineers is the civil engineer and Transportation Engineering Northwest is the traffic consultant.

The 398,000-square-foot existing store was built in 1979 as a warehouse, and converted to house Ikea in 1994.

About 500 jobs are being created during construction.
