SEATTLE — Seattle Tunnel Partners resumed mining late Tuesday following a break for rest and routine maintenance.
Crews had been mining around the clock since April 29 to clear the viaduct, which was shut down for 10 days during that operation. WSDOT reopened the viaduct on May 8, but STP kept mining until last Friday.
As of Wednesday, the tunnel machine named Bertha had mined 2,008 feet of its 9,270-foot route and installed more than 300 concrete tunnel rings.
Bertha is approaching the Columbia Street on-ramp to the viaduct.
A WSDOT spokeswoman said engineers believe it is safe for traffic to use the on-ramp while Bertha tunnels below, so the on-ramp will remain open.
