San Francisco International Airport held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for its $2.4 billion Terminal 1 renovation project.

Existing facilities will be demolished and reconstructed to create a new Terminal 1 Center and Boarding Area B. There also will be a new centralized security checkpoint, consolidated baggage handling system, dining and retail concessions, and post-security connecting walkways.

An interim boarding area made up of nine gates will be developed while future facilities are built. It is expected to open in September and include dining and retail concessions, as well as a children's play area.

The rest of the 1 million-square-foot project will be completed in phases and should open in 2024. The new Boarding Area B will have 24 gates, including six international arrivals gates that have direct access to the U.S. Customs & Border Protection inspection area.

Boarding Area B will initially open with nine gates in December 2018, followed by another eight gates in June 2019 and the remaining seven gates in September 2020. The new Terminal 1 Center and refreshed Boarding Area C are expected to open in mid-2024.

Corgan + LDA/Snohetta/Turner Construction is design-build team for the interim gates and facilities. Hill International is the construction manager.

Hensel Phelps/Gensler/Kuth Ranieri Architects is the design-build team for Terminal 1 Center. A joint venture of Aecom and Cooper Pugeda Management is the construction manager.

A joint venture of Austin Commercial and Webcor Builders, and HKS/Woods Bagot/ED2 International/KYA, is the design-build team for the new Boarding Area B. The construction manager is WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff/AGS.

Terminal 1 is the oldest passenger terminal in use at the airport. It opened in 1963 as the South Terminal.
