ARLINGTON, Va. — Construction employment increased in 39 states between June 2015 and June 2016, according to Labor Department data released Friday.
Washington state was fourth highest in the nation, adding 12,500 jobs, which was an increase of 7.2 percent. The top gains were in California (32,300 for a 4.5 percent gain), Florida (25,500, 5.9 percent) and Colorado (13,200, 8.9 percent).
Washington also added 1,700 jobs from May to June, as half of the other states lost jobs.
Associated General Contractors of America officials said the results indicate the need to attract and retain construction workers.
“Construction demand is still growing strongly in all regions and among many types of owners,” said Ken Simonson, AGC chief economist, in a news release. “But contractors appear to be struggling to fill jobs in the short run.”
