Fox Island bridge: Replace or rehab?

Pierce County Public Works must decide whether to replace or rehabilitate the 1954 Fox Island Bridge, which is too narrow and fails to meet modern design standards. The bridge is the longest span that the county maintains.

The county and consultant HDR Engineering did a study that looked at the bridge's location and alignment as well as the options and costs for rehab or replacement.

“We now want feedback from the community on how they use the bridge, the design and location they prefer, and their preference on whether to replace or rehabilitate the bridge,” said county engineer Brian D. Stacy in a news release.

An open house will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at Nichols Community Center, 690 Ninth Ave., on Fox Island.

Pierce County will determine which option to choose and how to fund the work. No timelines have been set.

The 1,950-foot-long bridge is made of cast-in-place concrete and steel beams. Average daily traffic in 2014 was 6,840 vehicles.
