Smith Tower is preparing to reopen on Aug. 25 and Unico Properties is selling tickets now for a new tour and “visitor experience” at the 1914 landmark.
The self-guided tour about the history and architecture of Seattle's first high rise was created by Gallagher & Associates, a museum planning and design firm from San Francisco. Tickets are at http://www.smithtower.com.
The tower is getting a makeover from the ground floor to the observatory, according to Scott Brucker of Unico. The 35th floor Chinese Room will be renamed Smith Tower Observatory, with a cafe and speakeasy called Temperance. Some elements from the Chinese Room will remain such as the ceiling tiles and the “wishing chair.”
The Seattle architecture firm Graham Baba is overseeing design and construction for the observatory and a new ground floor retail space that will house Smith Tower Provisions, a general store with gifts, art, apparel, groceries and a soda fountain for tenants and visitors.
DP Inc. is the general contractor for the observatory, and BNBuilders is the general contractor for an amenities suite on the 22nd floor.
Smith Tower is owned and managed by Unico Properties. Hospitality services are managed by Columbia Hospitality.
Smith Tower is currently 87 percent leased.
