NYC opens $4.5B first phase of 2nd Avenue line

86th Street Station has a two-tiered layout to reduce crowding on the platform.

The ball dropped on New Year's eve in Times Square, but for New York City's new subway line that wasn't the case: the first phase of the new Second Avenue line opened on schedule on Jan. 1.
