Viaduct closing this weekend

SEATTLE — The Washington State Department of Transportation is closing the Alaskan Way Viaduct this weekend for its twice-yearly safety inspection.

Both directions of state Route 99 will close between South Spokane Street and the north end of the Battery Street tunnel, but this time it will be different from past inspections: The northbound roadway will close at 11 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, and the southbound roadway will be closed from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

This will allow Seattle Tunnel Partners to complete tunnel-related work.

The replacement tunnel is scheduled to open by early 2019.
