Sound Transit awarded a $4.6 million contract to South County Transit Partners for design-build project management on the $1 billion Federal Way Link Extension.
South County Transit Partners is a joint venture of Mott MacDonald and SNC-Lavalin. Mott MacDonald made the announcement last week, although Sound Transit approved the contract in February.
Phase one of the contract covers the preconstruction period up to the award of the design-build contract. The second phase provides project management services during design and construction. The JV's contract is worth up to $5 million with contingencies.
Some of the work that South County Transit Partners will perform includes engineering, project controls and scheduling, change management, technical support and inspection, and quality assurance and control.
A Sound Transit spokesman said the agency expects to issue a request for qualifications for a design-build contractor later this year and start construction in mid-2019. The entire line will open in 2024.
The project will extend light rail 7.8 miles from Angle Lake Station in SeaTac to Federal Way Transit Center. New stations will be built near Kent Des Moines Road, South 272nd Street and Federal Way Transit Center.
A trip from Federal Way to Sea-Tac Airport is expected to take 15 minutes on the new line.
