After 30 years, solar energy gains traction
Sunny states, such as California and Hawaii, are finding solar energy a competitive alternative to nonrenewable sources. As prices for solar power systems come down, more states may tap into the sun.

Southern California Edison is installing 2 square miles of solar panels on as many as 150 commercial
building rooftops. The Fontana, Calif., warehouse in the foreground, outfitted with 33,700 panels, was the first.
AFTER 30 YEARS of trying to squeeze electricity from sunlight, the solar energy industry is finally gaining some traction in its effort to compete with fossil fuels.
