The Washington State Department of Ecology has placed new limits on pollution levels in stormwater runoff from industrial plants. The rules affect about 1,200 permitted locations across the state.
The new industrial permit goes into effect Jan. 1, 2010. It reduces how much copper and zinc industries can have in their stormwater discharges. Copper is commonly found in brake pads, paints and industrial materials, and affects the ability of salmon to sense predators. Zinc is often used in industrial settings to wash chain link fences and galvanized roofs, and can bind with silt to suffocate fish.
