City parks to save by watering less

SEATTLE — The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department says it's working on a strategy to reduce its water use and costs in anticipation of possible budget cuts.

Parks pays about $1.25 million a year to irrigate 300 of the city's 430-plus parks. Of these, about 100 have their water use regulated by a computerized irrigation system that measures how much water is needed at any give time and turns irrigation on and off at precise times.
