The new Visitor's Center at Washington State University won an award at the Greenbuild conference in New Orleans for its use of FSC-certified wood.
The 4,277-square-foot center was designed and built by Olson Kundig Architects and Sellen Construction. It won in the commercial/institutional category.
The awards jury praised the project's innovation and called it “an advertisement for wood.”
The center uses cross-laminated timber, oriented strand board and Pine-beetle-kill wood, as well as exposed FSC-certified structural elements. OKA said in a press release that the center shows WSU's commitment to sustainable and innovative construction.
OKA said the visitor center's FSC percentage is 69 percent. The team has applied for LEED silver certification.
The Forest Stewardship Council runs the certification program and promotes sustainable forest management practices.
