WSDOT says crews from Ram Construction of Bellingham are building a new section of SR 542 near Glacier Springs because of erosion along the Nooksack River.

Work will be done in April.

The agency said during a two-week period of heavy rain last fall as much as six feet of land near the eastbound lane washed away, leading Gov. Jay Inslee to declare a state of emergency and seek $3 million in federal funds.

The highway is being moved north, away from the river.

SR 542 serves residents of the area and carries thousands of vehicles daily to Mount Baker Ski Area and Artist Point.

WSDOT said in a press release that the realignment will also reduce the effect of the highway as a barrier to the Nooksack River's natural forces.
