$16M available for drought relief

OLYMPIA — A total of $16 million for drought relief is now available statewide to deal with water shortages that affect farms and fish.

The Department of Ecology is accepting applications for public projects to help protect health and safety and reduce economic or environmental impacts.

Grants may be used to develop or modify water sources; purchase or lease water or water rights; construct an emergency intertie or connection to the public water supply; build transmission pipelines, diversion structures or storage devices; find and repair leaks; and operate conservation and education programs.

Matching funds of 50 percent are required except for drinking water projects for small communities with low incomes.

Application forms and information are on Ecology's website ecy.wa.gov under 2015 Drought Emergency Grant Program.
