Help state plan ‘Baker-to-Bellingham'

OLYMPIA — The State Department of Natural Resources forming a committee to help create a recreation plan for state lands from Mount Baker to Bellingham.

DNR is taking applications for the committee, which will have 12 to 15 volunteer members with diverse recreation interests. They will recommend guidelines for DNR to use in developing the plan, with monthly meetings over two years. Applications are due by Jan. 29.

Two open houses on the process are set for 7-9 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the Port of Bellingham Cruise Terminal, 355 Harris Ave., and Jan. 20 at Lynden Community Center, 401 Grover St.

The plan will be used for 10 to 15 years to clarify what types of activities will happen in the 86,000-acre area, which includes Sumas Mountain, borders three forks of the Nooksack River, connects with Whatcom County parks and provides views of the Cascade Range. The plan will also help DNR pursue construction and maintenance funds for facilities.

Information is at http://www.dnr.wa.gov/BakertoBellingham.
