JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A joint committee tasked with reviewing state regulations quizzed the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation over a new set of regulations that critics said could be overly burdensome for companies and people tasked with cleaning up chemical spills.
The department is proposing changes to how the state deals with contaminated sites. Among those changes were new maximum limits for certain chemicals found in soil and groundwater after an area is contaminated. Chief among the concerns for the more than 30 companies, state and federal regulatory agencies and legislators who weighed in during public comment periods on the regulations, were new, more stringent standards for certain chemicals — like arsenic — and how they are calculated.
