Corps' new flood forecasts raise new concern: Are inland bridges too low?

This January photo shows the Virginia Street bridge in Reno, Nev., above the rising waters of the Truckee River. The bridge built last year replaced a century-old one where logjams were blamed for flooding that caused extensive damage in 1997.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A century-old train trestle stands as one of the trophies of Des Moines' push to spruce up its downtown. Bicyclists and pedestrians pose for pictures beside the brightly painted beams of the Red Bridge and gather on viewing platforms overlooking the Des Moines River.
