MOSES LAKE -- The Port of Moses Lake has formed an alliance between Grant County International Airport and the Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport in Taipei, Taiwan.
The airports signed a "sister airport alliance" during recent ceremonies in Taipei while officials were visiting Taiwan. The alliance will promote cooperation in trade and business opportunities between Taiwan and Washington state.
The airports have agreed to participate in developing intermodal transportation hubs, hold aviation conferences and establish flight training and aviation maintenance technology exchange programs. They will also work to encourage cargo and high-tech development at or near both airports. The effort may put Moses Lake in a position to be competitive with air carrier and cargo facilities in Anchorage, port officials said.
Larry Peterson, president of the Moses Lake port, said the airport is well positioned to benefit from the rapidly growing volume of air cargo and high tech business between the western U.S. and Asia.
The Grant County Airport is one of the largest commercial airports in the United States with a main runway over 13,500 feet long which is used by Boeing and major air carriers. Japan Airlines has had a jet aircrew training center there for 30 years.
