New family portrait: 3D statue selfies

  • Digital cameras and smartphones killed mall portrait studios, but 3-D printing has sparked a new trend. Wal-Mart is offering eight-inch figurines for $100.

    The typical 3-D-printed statue is printed in full color from a material known as “sandstone” — really, gypsum powder. The statues range from three to eight inches tall.

    NEW YORK — Walk into Eddie DaRoza's office and you'll find two of him there: the actual 32-year-old video producer, and a 5-inch statuette of him.
