After Hours: AIA looks at films that shaped Seattle

Joan O'Brien and Elvis Presley take in the view from the Space Needle in “It Happened at the World’s Fair.”

SEATTLE — Film critic Robert Horton of Seattle Weekly and the Everett Herald is the featured speaker at next week's AIA Urban Design Forum, and his topic is “Seattle in the Movies.”

Horton will look at how the city's image — past and future — has been shaped by depictions on screen in movies such as “Sleepless in Seattle”; “The Parallax View” (with the famous assassination scene atop Seattle Center); “It Happened at the World's Fair” (when cropduster pilot Elvis came to Seattle); the heartbreaking documentary “Streetwise”; “The Fabulous Baker Boys” and “American Heart (both starring Jeff Bridges) and the 1933 movie “Tugboat Annie.” And who can forget Connie Stevens as a gun-toting undercover narcotics agent in the 1976 “Scorchy.”

The free event takes place at the Center for Architecture & Design, 1010 Western Ave., at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26.

RSVP at aiaseattle.org.
