After Hours: Exhibit of cars that reflect our culture

The 1967 VW Beetle is part of a new show at America’s Car Museum in Tacoma of vehicles that best reflect their time. Visitors can weigh in and could change the exhibit.

TACOMA —A new exhibit opens Nov. 9 at America's Car Museum called “Through the Lens: Cars Defined by an American Century.”

The museum said in a press release that the show will focus on milestones in technical innovation, design, labor, commerce, mobility and entertainment — with one vehicle from each decade that exemplifies these characteristics — rather than cars that were commercially successful. As an example, America's Car Museum curator Scot Keller said the 1935 Airflow CW Limousine was a commercial failure but represented a radical turning point in terms of its aerodynamic design.

Among the vehicles featured are the 1917 Crane-Simplex, 1930 Packard 740 Custom Super Eight, 1945 Willys MB Jeep, 1979 Honda Civic and the 2004 Toyota Prius.

Visitors can vote on which cars they believe best represent each decade following WWII, and that may lead to changes in the exhibit.
