Q. One is formed from typographical marks, the other is an image. One has a small set of samples, the other has some 1,900 vetted items. One can be language specific, the other is recognizable to users worldwide. What is being compared here?
A. Emoticons and emojis, and they are not the same, says Douglas Heaven in New Scientist magazine. Emoticons, such as the smiley “:)” or sad “:(” face, are composed of standard keyboard symbols, while emojis are small images which can be embedded in text and are widely available on smart phones and such.
