The concept for Spokane's new $5 million YMCA at 2421 N. Discovery Place is a "high-tech lodge." Organic, exterior shapes and textures are brought inside to give a sense of comfort and appropriateness to traditionally outdoor activities.

Visual contact between family members using different areas of the 48,000-square-foot, two-story complex was a high priority.
The lobby features views of the swimming pools, second-floor workout center and the children's play area.
From the second floor, there are views of the teen center, climbing wall, gymnasium and pools. The natatorium features two large pools: a lap pool and a second pool which starts at zero feet deep so wheelchairs have easy access. That pool also features a 120-foot slide and a giant turtle that spurts water.
Daylight and indirect light are essential to the sense of the outdoors. Suspended kites and ceiling "clouds" reflect light, eliminating direct fixtures over the pools and exercise equipment.
