U.S. Coast Guard

The Coast Guard sector in Juneau said Capt. Phillip Thorne has taken over command of the sector after Capt. Shannan Greene relinquished the position. He has served in Alaska for 10 years and has been the Seventeenth District Chief of Response since 2016, overseeing search and rescue, ports and waterways security missions.

Corporations for Communities

Washington's Secretary of State will recognize for-profit companies for work in their communities. The National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion goes to businesses nominated by the public in the Corporations for Communities award program. Nominations are due by Aug. 31 and forms can be found on the Secretary of State's website at http://www.sos.wa.gov/corps/corpsforcommunities/ . Any for-profit corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership is eligible. Last year the NASS Medallion went to Birch Equipment of Bellingham, Republic Services of Bellevue, US Martial Arts Center of Olympia and Sleep Train of Kent, now Mattress Firm.

In Seattle, Graham Construction & Management added Alexis Den Herder and Erin Reilly as project engineers; Ken Hokens and Phil Bowman as senior project engineers; Jake Brown, Jed Smith, Mick Sheedy, Rick Bradford and Erich Hoobler as superintendents; Nancy Hawke and Chris Griffin as senior project managers; and Justin Gotcher as project manager. Den Herder is working on the Dravus Apartments and Reilly is on the 100 Denny Apartments. Hokens has 19 years of construction experience, starting as a union ironworker. Bowman has four years of experience working with healthcare, retail and multifamily projects. Brown has been in construction for over 30 years, specializing in high-rise, multifamily and retail projects. Smith has experience with multifamily, retail and office tenant improvement projects. Sheedy has 25 years of construction experience and is supporting Westbank's 1200 Stewart project. Bradford has worked on healthcare and multifamily projects for 26 years. Hoobler has over 22 years of construction experience. Hawke has worked on healthcare, tenant improvements and office remodel projects for 23 years. Griffin has 28 years of experience working on multifamily and education projects. Gotcher has nine years of industry experience and is on the 100 Denny project.

Trico Companies

Nilson

Kyle Nilson was promoted to assistant project manager at Burlington-based Trico Companies. Nilson grew up operating heavy equipment for his family's construction company before earning a bachelor's degree in construction management from Central Washington University. While attending college he was in the operators union and traveled to remote parts of Alaska to build airport and roadway projects during the summer. He has experience as a foreman and project engineer in Alaska.

PCL Construction Services

In its Seattle office, PCL Construction Services promoted Jared Gothard to assistant project manager and added Patrick Webber as project manager, Doug Sprute as senior estimator, Mel Rostron as manager of the health and safety program, Richard Femenella as superintendent and Brent Siegfried as field engineer. Gothard started with PCL in 2012, and has worked on the Cielo and Potala towers, the South 200th Link extension and several airport projects. Webber transfered from PCL's Hawaii office, where he worked for 15 years. Sprute also spent several years in the Hawaii office, and has been with PCL since 1994. Rostron has run safety programs at PCL's Hawaii and California offices since 2008. Femenella joined the company in 2014 and spent the last few years working for the Transportation Infrastructure Group on the South 200th Link extension. Siegfried recently earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Washington State University.

Pierce County Parks and Recreation

Roxanne E. Miles has been named director of Pierce County Parks and Recreation, starting July 17. Miles joined the county in 2016 as business and financial operations manager for the Planning and Public Works Department. She also worked for Metro Parks Tacoma, where she managed parks and recreation services, and led major planning initiatives. Miles will be accountable for teams that maintain over 4,200 acres at 50 sites, including recreation centers, a sports complex, ice rink, skateboard park, boat launches, golf courses, trails and open spaces.

Bartell Drugs

Bartell Drugs, the 127-year-old Northwest-based chain, will have a new store in Arlington, at the corner of Highway 9 and 204th Street. The 14,622-square-foot store is slated to break ground this summer and open in the first quarter of 2018. Two more stores will open this summer in Green Lake and Snoqualmie Ridge.

CBRE office wins WELL gold

CBRE’s new Vancouver, B.C., office

CBRE's new Vancouver, B.C., office — designed by Perkins+Will — has achieved WELL Building's gold level certification.

It's B.C.'s first such project in a new or existing interior space. CBRE's Loren Bergmann said in a statement, “We believe that the workplace environment should and can actively benefit the health and well-being of employees, not diminish it. We believe embracing workplace wellness is a key priority for our industry.” An interior staircase connects four floors, and there are living trees on each floor. The office uses lots of wood and other natural materials.

WELL focuses on human health and wellness in seven categories: air, water, light, nourishment, fitness, comfort and mind. WELL combines best practices in design and construction with medical and scientific research.

Hughes Marino hires Rice and Curtis

California-based Hughes Marino announced recently that it is opening an office here, on the 25th-floor office of Russell Investments Center. Now the firm is hiring. The six-year-old firm, which specializes in tenant representation, hired Owen Rice and Gavin Curtis from CBRE. In a statement, CEO Jason Hughes said, “We are excited to have found such perfect team members to open an office in the fastest-growing big city in the country. Owen and Gavin have deep relationships and understand the needs of businesses in the region.” Other new hires will be announced soon. Hughes Marino also has offices in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

Tour Bellevue July 20 with NAIOP

NAIOP is offering a tour of booming downtown Bellevue, where several new projects are taking shape or being planned. NAIOP estimates that 700 residential units are under construction or planned, along with 700 hotel rooms, 1.3 million square feet of office space and 400,000 square feet of retail. The event begins at 11 a.m. July 20 and runs to about 7 p.m., with lunch, a panel discussion and a walking tour. Speakers will include Jim Melby of Kemper Development, Craig Dobbs of Trammell Crow and David Allen of McKinstry. Stops will include 929 Office Tower, Bellevue City Hall, the Kemper W Hotel and Kemper Residences. The event ends with a reception at WeWork. Details and registration: naiopwa.org.

Cairncross and Hempelmann

The Seattle law firm Cairncross and Hempelmann said Traci Shallbetter has joined the firm, focusing on complex real estate and land use transactions for local and national clients in acquisition, development and disposition. She is an expert in easements, covenants and land use permitting.

Washington Dental Service Foundation

Washington Dental Service Foundation is changing its name to Arcora Foundation. It was founded and funded by nonprofit Delta Dental of Washington, a dental benefits company. Arcora Foundation focuses on demonstration projects, training and expanding access to care.
