It has the makings of a high-noon standoff, with one grocer staring down another and sneering about how downtown Tacoma “ain't big enough for the both of us.”
One grocer is preparing to stake out territory on the ground floor of Pacific Plaza, a shiny new mixed-use project. Grace Pleasants, who wants to develop a project up the street, hopes to lure a second grocer to her mixed-use project, which includes turning the landmark Elks Temple into a McMenamins along with apartments, hotel, retail and a city-owned parking garage.
