Holland shows design for Westlake Steps

Holland Partner Group has released new designs for two of the four apartment buildings that will be part of Westlake Steps on Westlake Avenue North.

A design review recommendation meeting is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday at Queen Anne Community Center, 1901 First Ave. W., for buildings at 1287 Westlake Ave. N. and 1414 Dexter Ave. N.

Each will be six stories. Together they will have 319 units and 248 parking spaces.

City records show over the summer Holland filed applications for shoring and excavation as well as construction permits.

The two buildings will be south of Galer Street between Westlake and Dexter. Both will be 65 feet tall but because of the sloping site, the western building will appear taller. Both will have Lake Union views.

According to the documents, architect Weber Thompson wants the buildings to be “visual anchors” that signal entry into the rapidly changing South Lake Union neighborhood.

The eastern building is designed in a U shape with a courtyard in the middle overlooking the lake. The design aims to break up the mass of buildings, making them appear like several smaller structures. Documents show large rooftop decks on both buildings.

Last December Holland paid $79.5 million for 14 parcels on 5.5 acres between Westlake and Dexter. Holland told the DJC in late August it was getting ready to start construction on 1101 Westlake: a six-story, 150,000-square-foot office building. The land purchase included a master-use permit for the office building.

As part of Westlake Steps, Holland is planning two more six-story apartment buildings at 1207 Westlake Ave. N. with a total of 387 units and 234 parking spaces in a shared underground garage.
