‘Up' house won't land on Orcas Island

SEATTLE — A plan to move Ballard's “Up” house to Orcas Island went over like a lead balloon.

Almost two months after it was announced that the Opal Community Land Trust would try to raise $205,000 to move and restore the Edith Macefield house, the nonprofit said it didn't receive enough donations to reach its goal.

A Kickstarter page generated just $18,649 in pledges, and other donations were insufficient.

The current owner of the property has offered another party the opportunity to move the house and ensure it is not demolished.

The house, at 1438 N.W. 46th St., became famous after its elderly owner refused to sell to developers to make way for the Ballard Blocks retail and office center, which surrounds the house on three sides. The house is often compared with a similar house portrayed in the 2009 Pixar movie “Up.”
