Land trust buys $1M Lummi Island quarry

LUMMI ISLAND, Whatcom County (AP) — A land trust group has purchased 105 acres of quarry land on Lummi Island for $1.08 million with plans to restore the area for conservation, low-impact recreation and saltwater access.

The Bellingham Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1JQ0MCU ) that the Lummi Island Heritage Trust closed the deal with Resource Transition Consultants and Aggregates West on Sept. 30.

Heritage Trust received grants and private donations now totaling more than $1.1 million for the purchase. They are still raising $370,000 to pay for other costs related to the acquisition and stewardship of the land.

The land trust says the goal is to restore habitat that was affected by mining activities and return the area to a natural state to benefit marine life.

The group will outline the restoration at a town hall on Oct. 20.
