Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo opened Friday in Bellevue Square, the first new tenant in what was once J.C. Penney department store.
Uniqlo is the first of three retailers that will occupy the space, which has been renamed South Common. Spanish clothing chain Zara will open a 26,000-square-foot store Wednesday. Later this month, a new store concept by Foot Locker called House of Hoops will open.
By the middle of next year, a grocery store called 365 by Whole Foods Market will open at South Common. Bellevue is one of five markets where Whole Foods is opening this new value-oriented store. The others are Portland, Houston, Los Angeles and Santa Monica, California.
The 16,000-square-foot Uniqlo is that chain's first store in the Pacific Northwest.
The Bellevue Square location is the second in this region for Zara, which opened a store last year at Westlake Center in Seattle.
J.C. Penney closed the Bellevue Square store last year and the space was renovated to house several smaller retailers.
Sclater Architects designed South Common, and GLY Construction is building it.
