NYC has $2.6B to fight homelessness

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's mayor is announcing a $2.6 billion investment to help tackle the city's homelessness crisis.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that the city will use the money to create 15,000 housing units over the next 15 years.

Those “supportive housing” units would be paired with on-site social services to help domestic abuse victims, veterans and those living on the street.

De Blasio made a point to say the city was acting alone and “not waiting” on help from the state government. Negotiations had taken place between the city and state to split the responsibility for funding 12,000 units of housing. But the city will now fund the entire expansion.

Homelessness is a growing problem in New York and has taken a toll on De Blasio's poll numbers.
