Construction crews have begun work on a 74-unit, mixed-use building at a long-vacant site at 1420 E. Madison St. on Capitol Hill.

Broadcast Apartments also will have 3,000 square feet of retail and 70 underground parking spaces. It broke ground at the end of December.

Units will average about 600 square feet, with a mix of layouts, from studios to two bedrooms.

The site was last home to a Taco Time restaurant that was demolished in 2010 to make way for a project that never got off the ground.

John Links of 1420 East Madison Street LLC acquired the property in 2014 for $3.6 million.

The Metropolitan Cos. is developing the project and Johnson Architecture & Planning is the designer. Other team members include CT Engineering, structural engineer; KPFF Consulting Engineers, civil engineer; Rushing, mechanical/electrical engineer; and Two9 Design, interior designer.

Blanton Turner will handle the marketing and property management.

Units are expected to open in early 2017.
