112-room Cambria Hotel in Third Avenue complex

Cambria Hotels & Suites will open a 112-room hotel that is planned as part of redeveloping the 1928 building that houses Belltown Self Storage at 1915 Third Ave. in Seattle.

Cambria is an upscale brand of Choice Hotels International.

Herzel Hazan and Shimon Mizrahi of Seattle-based Ariel Development said in a statement that they are partnering with Patrick J. Reilly and Lorin Christean from Urban Self Storage, Inc. to develop the project, which will add eight floors to the existing six-floor structure to create the hotel and 50 housing units.

Mizrahi said construction is slated to start at the end of the year.

Poppi S. Handy of Third Place Design Co-operative is the architect for the project, which is set to go before the Seattle design review board at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in Room L280 of Seattle City Hall.

The design proposal calls for putting the hotel in the existing structure and adding eight floors above for more hotel space and 50 residential units.

The ground floor would have space for the hotel lobby, and a restaurant and coffee shop. The basement would have back-of-house functions for the hotel as well as meeting spaces for residents and the community.

The terra cotta facade of the building would be preserved. No parking is planned for the project.

The Belltown Self Storage property is owned and operated by an Urban Self Storage affiliate.

The building is also known as White Garage. It appears to have been constructed for William E. Grimshaw and was designed by Henry Bittman, according to a city of Seattle survey. Among his firm's notable Seattle projects are the Decatur Building (1921), Terminal Sales Building (1923), Olympic Tower (c. 1929) and Eagles Auditorium (1924-25).

The design proposal for the project is at http://tiny.cc/lk4t8x/.

Choice Hotels has a number of Cambria Hotels & Suites properties in development in cities that range from downtown Denver to New York to Asheville, North Carolina.
