Lower Queen Anne could go taller with new rezone

Buildings up to 160 feet are being considered in some areas.

No one's proposing to build another Space Needle, but Lower Queen Anne could get a lot taller under a city rezone proposal.

The city of Seattle has released a draft environmental impact statement for rezoning Uptown Urban Center.

One version of the proposal would allow buildings up to 16 stories tall.

Uptown Urban Center comprises Lower Queen Anne and Seattle Center. The 297-acre area is bounded by Upper Queen Anne, Belltown, South Lake Union and Interbay.

The rezone process started in 2014, and a community design charrette was held in June. There will be an open house/community meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at Seattle Center Armory to present three zoning options.

Here are the options:

• Alternative 1: No action, with current zoning and heights maintained.

• Alternative 2: Mid-rise buildings up to 125 feet tall, with an affordable housing requirement, plus design and development standards.

• Alternative 3: High-rise, buildings up to 160 feet tall, with the same affordable housing requirement and design and development standards.

You can comment on the draft EIS until Sept. 1 to senior planner Jim Holmes at Jim.Holmes@seattle.gov.

City Council is expected to consider the rezone in early 2017.

The draft EIS is available online at http://bit.ly/2aafk8M.
