More apartments for corridor on Dexter

By BRIAN MILLER
Journal staff reporter

The Dexter Avenue North corridor keeps sprouting new apartment buildings.

The latest to file with the city is a 60-unit project at 1601 Dexter, at the corner of Garfield Street.

An early plan by Urban Design Group indicates the demolition of two older offices, built in 1912 and 1977, and the construction of a new apartment building.

Urban Design Group lists as its client Kevin Wang.

The old buildings and the 9,800-square-foot site are currently owned by the Monnahan family, which acquired the two parcels for $700,000 in two transactions in 1993 and 2004. Current tenants include Riley Athletics, and GCH Planning and Landscape Architecture.

Zoning allows structures up to 40 feet in height. Urban Design Group's plans describe a 40,000-square-foot structure. Parking isn't specified, but a driveway is indicated.

Directly east of the site, Stream Real Estate is planning 88 units at 1600 Dexter. To the north, at 1701 Dexter, Daly Partners recently completed 65 units. To the south, at 1511 Dexter, Bellwether Housing is planning 71 affordable units.
