    Our best buildings are part of the common wealth -- storehouses of value that provide a better life for everyone.

    Fifth Avenue has its treasures. Two landmarks -- one old and one new -- stand only a block apart. One is nearing completion, the other nearing demolition. One is a modern masterpiece and an instant landmark, the other is a true historic landmark that lacks official designation or legal protection.
