CLT panels rise in Bellevue church sanctuary

Goudy Construction is installing a row of 17 cross-laminated timber panels that will become the soaring backdrop to the sanctuary of the new Bellevue First Congregational Church.

The church last year sold its site at 752 108th Ave. N.E. and bought the Star Plaza office building at 11061 N.E. Second St. for its new home. It is remodeling the 1970s lowrise building by demolishing the northwest corner and building the 47-foot-high, 5,500-square-foot sanctuary.

CLT panels average 39 feet tall and 7.5 feet wide. They sit on a new concrete slab, supported on braced steel frames below.

Penticton, B.C.-based Structurlam engineered, manufactured and shipped the panels. Goudy is tilting the panels one-by-one from a staging area and has about 10 installed.

Architect atelierjones says the undulating panels will wash indirect light downwards from northern skylights and 30-foot-tall side windows.

DCI Engineers is the structural engineer.

The 49,000-square-foot building is expected to open in the spring.
