Intel cuts prices up to 42 percent for chips used in laptops

NEW YORK - Intel Corp. said Tuesday it is cutting prices by up to 42 percent on chips for laptop computers, reflecting the semiconductor company's new policy of trimming prices more frequently.

Effective in May, prices for the mobile Pentium II running at 266 megahertz will fall 8 percent to $637 from $696, while the 233 megahertz version will drop 16 percent to $391 from $466, the company said.

For older Pentium MMX chips, the price cuts were more dramatic. The 200 megahertz Pentium MMX chip will fall to $134, a 42 percent drop from the February price of $230.

Mobile Pentium MMX chips running at speeds below 200 megahertz will fall to below $100.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., cut its prices on chips for desktop computers April 15.

The chip giant, which owns about 90 percent of the microprocessor market, used to announce price cuts four times a year. But last fall the company decided to cut prices more frequently as the chip market began to break into more segments.
