Microsoft releases software for "dumb" terminals

SEATTLE (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. has released a new version of its Windows-based software to run so-called "dumb" machines like electronic cash registers and bar code readers, the company announced Thursday.

Dumb terminals, also known as thin clients, do not have the memory or processing power that personal computers have. They usually run only a single program, and they are usually linked together and to a central computer.

The new Windows software, called Terminal Standard 1.5, will also include a version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browsing software, which will allow these devices to access the Internet.

Devices using Terminal Standard 1.5 can be linked to larger computers running Windows 2000, the company said. The larger computers can then be used to download new instructions to or gather information from the terminal devices.
