The exterior of the old Fernie Schoolhouse was given an energy-efficient EIFS coat.

901 2nd Ave

Location: Fernie, British Columbia, Canada

Project team: Sunco Drywall, wall and ceiling contractor; Leblond Partnership, architect; Commercial Construction Supply, supplier; Plasti-Fab and Sto Corp., manufacturers

The 901 2nd Ave project is a transformation of the original 1908 Fernie Schoolhouse site into uniquely designed condominiums located in historic downtown Fernie.

The original exterior was replaced with an energy-efficient exterior insulated finish system designed to look like brick.

Unique to the schoolhouse are glass-enclosed third-floor penthouses. These residences have one to four bedrooms and up to 2,630 square feet of space.

Heritage brick is prevalent throughout the first and second floors with ceilings heights of 14 to 15 feet.

Judge’s comment: “This project is a great example of saving a wonderful, old building by giving it a new life and a new, contemporary look with an energy-efficient EIFS cladding.”
