The construction excellence award for bridges went to the Alderwood Mall Boulevard Overcrossing Bridge. Numerous physical, geometric and environmental site constraints complicated the project to separate Alderwood Mall Boulevard traffic from 196th Street Southwest.

For instance, limited right-of-way in the highly-developed area coupled with highly congested traffic meant that the bridge had to clearspan the entire six-lane highway -- resulting in a 269-foot-long span. Also, the bridge is on a severe skew angle, and the structural depth of the bridge is limited by roadway geometry and clearance requirements. Cast-in-place concrete was used as the structural material.

The Alderwood Mall Boulevard Overcrossing Bridge was build as part project to construct a series of bridges that will make it easier for shoppers to get to Alderwood Mall. Included, are three new bridges to carry traffic over 196th Street Southwest and two I-5 freeway ramps.

The three bridges are part of an $80.4 million interchange improvement project on Interstate 5 that involves the city of Lynnwood, the Transportation Improvement Board and the state Department of Transportation. Planning for the project began back in 1990.
