The intersection at 29th Avenue and Grand Boulevard, winner of the municipal concrete paving award, was more than just an intersection for general contractor Acme Materials and Construction Co. of Spokane - it was a challenge.

The city designed the pavement sections with a one-day paving mix. The contractor had 30 calendar days to remove the rutted and worn asphalt, install a new signal system, do minor utility upgrades, and place 4,800 square yards of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement. Add to that pressure the traffic that was allowed access through the intersection while work was done.

The contractor used a Whiteman roller screed to place the concrete pavement and a maturity meter to determine the concrete strength.
