Kent’s 2000 Downtown Sidewalk Replacement and Gateway Improvements program included the construction of 3,870 square yards of concrete sidewalk and driveways, plus 1,920 square yards of reinforced cement concrete crosswalks with three cast-in-place Kent logos. Also included were concrete benches, pedestrian lighting and storm drainage improvements. The project was key in the city’s efforts to revitalize its downtown area and create a pedestrian-friendly environment near the new commuter rail station. Sidewalks were built with a parquet pattern, consisting of broom finishes in alternating directions. Acid-etched, colored concrete was used for the custom concrete benches to create a contrast with surrounding sidewalks and to emphasize the city’s logo. Sandblasted, colored concrete was used for the concrete flatwork. Crosswalks were constructed with colored concrete and finished with an intricate, checked pattern to accent each intersection. |
