[Concrete Applications]

TILT-UP STRUCTURES

All four entries in this category were from the Puget Sound area. Included were: Circuit City-Olympia, North Pacific Insurance Company, Issaquah Commons and the Muckleshoot Casino.

A close battle ensued between the Issaquah Commons and North Pacific Insurance projects. The victor: North Pacific Insurance. Circuit City placed third.

The North Pacific Insurance project involved building a 50,000-square-foot regional headquarters in Quadrant's Monte Villa Center in Bothell.

The building doesn't look like a tilt-up structure. This effect was achieved by recessing brick panels into the exterior of the wall panels and cladding them together with imported granite piers. The result: very little of the concrete structural frame and skin is visible.

One of the most unique features is the concrete "eyebrow" pieces used to provide window shading for low-energy consumption. The panels were actually cast with recessed sleeves and bent-out rebar dowels to accept the flat, horizontal slab at a later date. After the panels were tilted, a reusable rolling stage was positioned at each panel where the horizontal sections were cast and cured.
