SPECIAL APPLICATIONS -- ARTISTIC

Entries in this category really showed how versatile concrete can be. After splitting "Special Applications" into artistic and technical categories, the judges took the six original entries and assigned three to the artistic category and three to the technical category. Additionally, the judges took an uncategorized entry, the Haven of Rest Mausoleum renovation and addition project, and included it in the artistic category. Along with the mausoleum, the entries were: Land Rover dealership, Woodland Park Trail of Vines project and Marymoor rock climbing structure.

The Woodland Park Trail of Vines project edged out Marymoor climbing rock for top honors. Taking third was the Haven of Rest Cemetery.

The Trail of Vines project stands two stories tall and serves as the centerpiece of an exhibit at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. It also conceals a holding area for exhibited animals, mechanical and electrical systems, and the keeper's offices and work areas.

Cast-in-place concrete was used to achieve the project's goal of recreating three distinct miniature tropic environments -- Borneo, Malaysia and India. Ready-mix concrete was used to create the array of different geometric shapes in the project's design.

Another major element of the project is the exhibitry gunite rock and tree formations. Nearly 75 percent of the above-grade portion of the building is concealed with gunite-created rocks, trees, streams, waterfalls, moats, and mud and earthen formations.

The Marymoor climbing rock was a close second to the vines project.

The rock is the largest free-standing public climbing structure in the United States. Its spire rises 45 feet into the air and its base measures 34 feet. It was built of cast-in-place concrete utilizing handcrafted form liners that were custom-designed and built by a rock climbing expert from England.

The liners provided a finished concrete surface with a continuous, simulated rock texture with ridges, crevices and projections. Special climbing attachment rings were cast into the structure through the form liners. Voids were cast in certain areas for installation of special concrete hand-hold units and brick masonry.

A clear, anti-graffiti sealant was applied to all surfaces to facilitate future maintenance.
