CONCRETE PAVING PUBLIC WORKS

The best concrete paving job was awarded to the Interstate 405 Renton "S" curves project.

Surprisingly, only three projects were entered into this category. They included the Renton S-curves, Lyon's Ferry Road and Black Lake Boulevard.

The winner was Renton S-curves, closely followed by Lyon's Ferry Road. Third place went to Black Lake Boulevard.

The S-curves project was a 1.3-mile section of Interstate 405 that was redesigned by the state Department of Transportation to facilitate higher speeds, decrease accidents and cater to larger traffic volumes.

The state's design is a 12-inch-thick plain jointed concrete pavement with a 40-year design life. Tight controls on the paving operation resulted in an average profilograph measurement of 1 inches per lane mile.
