WACA Award: Bridges

Journal staff

Projects associated with the state Route 509 project in Tacoma dominated this category. The SR-509 projects included the SR-509/21st Street urban interchange, the SR-509 Foss Waterway Bridge and the SR-509 Puyallup River Bridge. Competition for SR-509 included the 51st Street Bridge, the CWN line overcrossing bridge and the Macadam Bridge replacement project.

SR-509/21st Street urban interchange

The top bridge project was the SR-509/21st Street urban interchange.

The top honors went to the SR-509/21st Street urban interchange. The project had many requirements to meet, including spanning the existing five-lane I-705 freeway, a two-lane local road and three railroad tracks. It also had to match existing abutment elevations and meet vertical clearances.

The interchange features a box girder superstructure and rectangular column substructure that matches the architectural elements of I-705, which was built in the mid-1980s.

The runners up were the SR-509 Foss Waterway Bridge and the SR-509 Puyallup River Bridge.
